About The Boston Mob

The Boston Mob website is a companion to my book of the same name. It will present the most original and interesting facts and stories about the New England underworld. During the 15 years or so I compiled information for “The Boston Mob,” I ran across vast amounts of interesting material.

Most of it couldn’t all fit into one book. So on this site, I’ll share much of it with the public. The site also will offer opinion, stories, and insights into the Boston-Providence criminal gangs and an in-depth record of their unique history.

What The Boston Mob Covers

The book itself is a slice of history of the New England underworld, with character portraits of some of the key personalities. We focus in particular on the crucial years of 1960-1970, which saw the Winter Hill-Charlestown Irish gang war (among others). This period also comprised the rise and fall of Robert Kennedy’s assault on the American Mafia — the Boston and Providence chapters in particular.

It also saw the collapse, through government prosecution, of the reign of Raymond Patriarca as the leading Mafia gang leader in New England. In fact, Raymond was possibly the most respected and influential Mafia don in the Northeast at the time. After the revelation that his office had been bugged by the FBI, his prestige was in tatters and he was facing jail terms.

In short, this was possibly the most chaotic decade in American organized crime history.
